Olympic Torch Relay - Community Christmas Concert
Exciting News
Sunday December 13th promises to be a very special day in Carleton Place.
The Olympic Torch will pass through town in the morning that day and a special Community Christmas Concert (country, folk, light rock & seasonal music) will take place downtown during the afternoon.
A CARLETON PLACE COMMUNITY CHRISTMAS will feature Lyle Dillabough & Friends and will be held "Up stairs At Ernies" above the Carleton Place Cinemas. The show will run from 2-4pm and best of all, admission to the event is free. Donations of food or cash will be accepted for those who wish to do so but the main objective of the organizers is to have people come and join in a community celebration.
Several other musicians have been invited to join Dillabough including; Jack Denovan, Pat Willbond, Darlene Thibault, Katheen Stroud, Kirk Armstrong and others too. Confirmed (at the time of the preperation of this piece) is Thibault, Dillabough, Councillor Jerry Flynn and the members of the original Blue Ridge Waters (Chris Cooper & Kevin Scharfe). This is the trio that Dillabough began his carreer with in the mid 70's. And of course;..you are invited to come and sing along as well!
"Upstairs At Ernies" is the latest development in the CP Cinema story. The original sanctuary area has been cleared of it's former arcade and gym usages and has now become a beautiful "live" performance venue.
Local entertainer Kirk Armstrong has been appearing there recently on Monday and Tuesday evenings. Comfortable seating and a home-like atmosphere make this an appealing venue for both performers and audiences alike.
"It's great to have something like this inside!" Says Carleton Place Town Councillor Jerry Flynn. This is in reference to attempts in the past two years to stage a "live' show outdoors. In each case cold, stormy weather happened to put a damper on the turnout and festivities.
Dillabough was involved with attempting to stage Wayne Rostad's "Christmas In The Valley" show here this year but things didn't come together fast enough to make it happen this time. Rostad, his people, along with Dillabough are hoping to stage that show in Carleton Place next year.
"The advantage of this type of event is that everyone can come and indeed is encouraged to come" Dillabough says. He went on to explain that; "Christmas is stressful for many and COMMUNITY CHRISTMAS is meant to be the type of event where one can come and just be themselves and have a good time. We need more of that in the world today and besides; the entertainment line-up isn't too shabby either." He said.

BIA working with Steps Against Breast Cancer
Exciting News
The BIA and the Canadian Cancer Society welcome Steps Against Breast Cancer to downtown Carleton Place on Saturday, September 19. The non-competitive, five-kilometer, fundraising walk takes place in communities across Ontario to raise money for breast cancer research, and to celebrate survivors and remember those who lost the battle.
Over the years, the BIA has been loosely involved with the annual event but the Cancer Society has decided to heighten the BIA’s participation in several ways. The BIA will contribute to advertising, provide registration and pledge forms at the office location, and on the event day, participants will walk most of the BIA’s downtown district.
Beginning at the Mill Street Youth Centre, the walk will run through most of the BIA district and end back at its origin. BIA businesses have shown their support for the walk in previous years by creating pink window displays.
The walk is a great opportunity to showcase BIA businesses and what downtown Carleton Place has to offer. We hope that this September, more members have the chance to get involved. A framed certificate will be awarded on the day of the walk to the merchant with the most-decorated and pinkest storefront.
BIA members can also support the walk through active participation, either individually or with a workplace team. Registration forms are available at the Carleton Place Town Hall, The Granary, Ferguson Graphics and TD Canada Trust.
In conjunction with the walk, a barbecue will take place outside of the youth centre and all are welcome to attend. Proceeds from the barbecue will go to the Canadian Cancer Society.
For further details on the walk and how you can get involved, including donating your products or services, contact Gerry or Elizabeth Leger by phone at 613-257-5401 or e-mail at e_g_leger@hotmail.com. |

Movies on the Mississippi: A Series of Independent Films
Exciting News
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Press Contact: Sarah Bingham Phone:257-7093 or cell 668-2257
Coming August 17 – 20, 2009:
CP Cinemas to Host
“Movies on the Mississippi: A Series of Independent Films”
July, 30, 2009, Carleton Place, ON – Small-town Canada meets metropolitan glam this August, when CP Cinemas in Carleton Place hosts Movies on the Mississippi: A Series of Independent Films. Sponsored by Partners Advantage GMAC Real Estate and Mortgage Alliance, Movies on the Mississippi: A Series of Independent Films will showcase a total of seven independent films during its four day run, and will include a number of special events, including Red Carpet Arrivals, Celebrity Meet and Greets, Industry Q&A Sessions and Wine and Cheese Receptions.
“These movies are guaranteed to entertain,” says Denise DuBarry Hay, Executive Producer of SHOOT THE HERO, one of the movies being screened. “Some of the films being showcased will be competing at prestigious film festivals like Sundance, the Toronto Film Festival, and more. This is a rare opportunity to catch an inside glimpse of the reality of film-making, and eight very distinct independent films.”
Independent film making is considered by many in the film industry to be the “heart and soul” of the movie business, and in recent years, a number of independents have gone on to capture top honors at the Internationally-acclaimed Cannes Film Festival. Likewise, independent films have proven themselves award-winners; with many winning Academy Awards (and beating out much larger blockbusters in the process).
Movies on the Mississippi: A Series of Independent Films promises to be one of the most exciting things to happen in Lanark County in quite a while - evidence that this is one rural community that is ready to embrace the art of film in its purest form. Even better, all of the proceeds from this spectacular cinematic event will be going to the Lanark County Food Bank and the Children’s Snowsuit Fund, thanks to the sponsorship of Partners Advantage GMAC Real Estate and Mortgage Alliance, Hay Family Development (Hayshore Estates) as well as the generosity of all of the film producers, actors, and, of course, CP Cinemas.

Seemingly at random, two brothers (Nic Nac Nicotera, Mike Hatton) find themselves stranded on their way to work after a series of misfortunes leaves them in a precarious predicament. Eventually forced to hitchhike, they find a ride from none other than our young engaged couple. But as the night unfolds everyone quickly discovers that their lives are somehow connected. FRIENDS OF SCOON PART OF SOUNDS OF DOWNTOWN
Exciting News
As part of the Sounds of Downtown festivities on Sept 6, an event will be hosted called `Friends of Scoon` at the Heritage Inn. The purpose of the event is to celebrate the life of Dale Scoon Scott. The concept is quite simple - musicians and the general public congregate at the Heritage Inn, tell some Scoon Stories and have some fun - just like Scoon would like it. Sounds of Downtown pass holders are guaranteed free admission- a cover charge of $10 applies to non pass holders . The Heritage Inn has graciously offered up dinners for two and their honeymoon suite as door prizes. The Blossom Shop has kicked in with a dozen roses for the honeymoon suite winners.
We are accepting door prizes and promise to actively promote any such contributions the night of the event. Any individual or company wishing to donate a door prize should simply sign up at the Heritage Inn (Main Street Suds).
Each person attending the event will be eligible for a door prize ticket. All participating musicians will receive THREE door prize tickets as an expression of gratitude from the organizers of the event. Anyone planning on attending the event should arrive EARLY. Advance tickets will be available at the Heritage Inn and are strongly
encouraged given the anticipated response to the event.
The response from area musicians has been very positive - some are altering their schedules to ensure their participation. No musician (amateur or professional) will be refused - all we ask is that they
sign up at the Heritage Inn well before Sept 6 so that we can properly
manage the event. The current plan is to have at least two stages set up within the
Heritage Inn for the event. If the response from musicians keeps
growing a third stage will be set up so that those in attendance can
rotate from set to set and enjoy a wide variety of music - all in
memory of Scoon.
Net proceeds of the event will be donated to the Carleton Place
Hospital Foundation. Please note that because of the expected turnout
and limited space, seating will be very limited - the focus is on
mingling and swapping Scoon stories. |
